Shade matters! Especially when you\u2019re located in one of the hottest areas of Las Vegas. And according to the RTC\u2019s Urban Heat Island Mapping data<\/a> that was just released, Clark County District E is one of those areas. Appropriately, Clark County Commissioner and RTC Board Member Tick Segerblom brought partners together to celebrate new shade coming to his district just in time for summer. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Commissioner Segerblom hosted the event that included a tree planting to highlight the County\u2019s long-term initiative to plant more trees throughout District E, as well as a display of the RTC\u2019s new slimline bus shelters that will help increase shade in areas where standard shelters don\u2019t fit.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Over the next year, the RTC will install more than 100 slimline shelters in the hottest parts of the Las Vegas valley, including more than 30 throughout District E. These new trees and transit shelters will change the landscape of the hottest parts of the valley for generations to come.<\/p>\r\n

The Urban Heat Island Mapping Study, held in August 2022, was powered by volunteers who drove pre-mapped routes with temperature sensors attached to their vehicles. In addition to adding shade where most needed, this community event provided an opportunity for the volunteers to gather again and celebrate the results of their work.<\/p>\r\n

Friday\u2019s celebration was made possible with the help of Clark County\u2019s Department of Environment and Sustainability, Get Outdoors Nevada, the UNLV School of Public Health, Nevada Plants, and Nevada Division of Forestry.<\/p>\r\n
