This week\u2019s blog story will answer some of those questions and provide more insight on Hispanic traditions that trace back hundreds of years.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/article\/20170331-the-mysterious-origins-of-the-piata\">Pi\u00f1atas<\/a>, everyone\u2019s favorite bright colored machete paper ornaments filled with candy are traditionally used at birthday parties and Christmas. Believe it or not, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mexconnect.com\/articles\/459-history-of-the-pinata\/\">pi\u00f1atas<\/a> originate back to 13<sup>th<\/sup> century China and are traced to when Marco Polo traveled from Europe to Asia. They became popular in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century when the Spanish brought the tradition over to Mexico. So, the next time you are at a birthday party that has a pi\u00f1ata, remember the rich history it has and perhaps find yourself indulging in a sweet treat as well.<\/p>\r\n<p>Secondly, the popular music style of <a href=\"https:\/\/l.facebook.com\/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ffolkways.si.edu%2Fque-viva-mariachi-meaning-movimiento%2Flatin-world%2Fmusic%2Farticle%2Fsmithsonian%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR0IkoYcNwD3Qxq6KkQ2LIYBZsYd_hSfQfKABIc1-stkPfBhDvFxOlsZH6M&amp;h=AT1YjLaoj4FOrv-jGePg_1LSCfF7Xxq9IInn1VXTFezITE0LjWs9h0274DxoboDLLi6QVtQnahE0Ludgz3T7kXtfsC27qwONm6wascrh1pHW7hhJ8HTgXmzKeO7M2kHffVs\">Mariachi<\/a> dates back to 19<sup>th<\/sup> century Jalisco, Mexico. Mariachi music can be heard at different occasions such as baptisms, weddings, birthdays and even funerals. This distinctive style of singing, combined with the unique instruments is what makes it so special. If you want to hear mariachi live, then check out <a href=\"https:\/\/lvccld.bibliocommons.com\/events\/search\/fq=program:(5a5fb0ec79ffd52700d0372f)\/event\/60bdf632c4d48f2900cf773c\">\u00a1Viva el Mariachi!<\/a> this Friday, Oct. 1 from 7 \u2013 8:30 p.m. at the Clark County Library for a special performance by local middle and high school students.<\/p>\r\n<p>Lastly, one of the more popular dances in Mexico that you may not be as familiar with is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/Latin-American-dance\/Mexico\">\u00a0ballet folkl\u00f3rico<\/a>. This style of dancing was started by choreographer Amalia Hern\u00e1ndez in 1952 and has grown, with many variations in Latin America. It is most recognized by the bright colored dresses and mariachi that accompanies these dances. What makes this style of dancing so special is the way the dances tell a story and portray cultural diversity.\u00a0 See this dance in action at the Smith Center on March 23.
