It\u2019s no secret that the last year has taken its toll on individuals, families, communities, and yes, transit systems, across the globe.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we are excited to look ahead to a brighter future in Southern Nevada as tourism opens back up, our community comes back to life, and transit drives toward pre-pandemic service.<\/p>\r\n
Today, the RTC\u2019s Board of Commissioners approved transit service adjustments that will not only replace the previously reduced service due to impacts from COVID-19, but also expand into areas where service was previously unavailable.\u00a0 Thanks to federal stimulus funding, the RTC will introduce two new routes, a new microtransit service, increased schedule frequencies, and an expanded paratransit service area that will all be available starting Sunday, August 8.<\/p>\r\n
Our community\u2019s input was critical in determining which services and geographical areas, were most critical for these service changes.\u00a0 During a 45-day public comment period, more than 7,000 people responded expressing they were looking forward to the better access and connectivity, shorter overall commute times, and fewer transfers. And we\u2019re looking forward to them too!<\/p>\r\n
So what does all of this mean?\u00a0 In addition to bringing transit service back to weekday levels for our existing customers, these changes will provide access to 185,000 residents who previously did not have transit access and create connections to 23,000 employment opportunities. These numbers include 21,000 individuals living at or below the poverty level, 18,000 senior citizens, 13,000 with a disability and 79,000 non-white or Hispanic residents.<\/p>\r\n
