This Black History Month, we are elevating the black influential voices in our community. To kick us off, we want to introduce you to a radio station and the man leading it. For 49 years, KCEP Power 88 has been Las Vegas\u2019 conduit to reaching the Black community and engaging others to connect with African Americans throughout Southern Nevada.\u00a0The nonprofit radio station has been led by General Manager Craig Knight for the past decade.\u00a0Knight, a Nevada Broadcaster Hall of Famer, brings innovation and unique partnerships to KCEP, including the RTC.<\/p>\r\n
The tagline for KCEP is \u201cWe Are One\u201d which denotes that the station is one with elected officials, community leaders, businesses and all citizens. Through music, informative shows and special events, KCEP is the community\u2019s connection.\u00a0Next year, the oldest urban radio station in Nevada will celebrate 50 years.<\/p>\r\n
We are proud to have KCEP as one of our many community partners of many years. In fact, in 2018, we hosted Transportation Matters on KCEP, a radio show focused on giving the community insight into the agency\u2019s inner workings and long-term goals for Southern Nevada. Former KLAS-TV news reporter, Sharie Harvin, interviewed members of the RTC team and facilitated the dialogue to stimulate interest around the valley\u2019s transportation infrastructure. For several years, KCEP has been a key partner in gathering community feedback for On Board<\/a>, a plan that set the long-term transportation priorities in Clark County.<\/p>\r\n KCEP played a major role in the recent presidential and local elections. The station\u2019s \u2018Vote In Power\u2019 campaign created a movement that set record turnout in the black community in the valley. Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 interview on \u2018The Wake Up Squad\u2019 radio show was one of the few conducted in her campaign. \u201cOur goal was to make sure that black people voted and understood their options. We didn\u2019t care which party or who they voted for.
