As of November 2020, Nevada has seen 278 lives lost on the state’s roadways, a four percent increase from the same time last year. While there are many dangerous driving behaviors at play, impairment is consistently a top cause of these fatalities year over year. In a year when we have been asked to Stay Home for Nevada, we have still seen an astronomical number of DUI fatalities and arrests. This has been attributed to an increase in house parties and as we look ahead to New Year’s Eve, the Nevada Department of Public Safety is prepared for these house celebrations to continue to pose this threat. In addition to increased enforcement by the DUI Strike Team and Joining Forces initiatives, the Las Vegas Coalition for Zero Fatalities will offer $5 off one Lyft ride to 250 new and existing users from 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 – 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 1 with code RIDESMART2021.

This year has truly been the Worst Year Ever, with Nevada maintaining Zero Fatalities on our roadways for a mere 18 hours and 18 minutes. It is important to remember that each and every one of us have a responsibility when we make the decision to get behind the wheel. All of these fatalities were completely preventable and the lack of accountability and respect for loss of life is astounding. The Nevada Department of Public Safety reminds road users that it is imperative that they always drive sober, watch out for each other, check your speed and call 911 or *NHP if you suspect an impaired driver. Zero Fatalities on our roadways starts with each and every one of us.

For more information about Zero Fatalities and their efforts in Nevada, please visit zerofatalitiesnv.com

Guest written by Andrew Bennett, Zero Fatalities Program Manager Historically, the holiday season is a deadly time period on Nevada’s roads.
