Today, the roadway is a busy arterial with more than half of vehicles traveling less than two miles in their commute. It also sees heavy pedestrian, transit and bicycling traffic. However, its wide lanes, fast speeds and lack of lighting and crosswalks contribute to its ranking as one of the roadways with the highest pedestrian fatalities statewide. Consequently, the Reimagine Boulder Highway study identifies numerous safety improvements, especially for pedestrians as well as proposals to improve mobility with more multi-modal options for travelers.

Over the last two years, more than 1,900 survey responses were gathered on a proposed concept to increase multimodal mobility and improve safety. Eighty percent approved a variety of changes including wider sidewalks, better lighting, center-running transit and high-comfort bikes lanes.

Now, the RTC and its partners are conducting the last round of community engagement to present a final recommendation. The proposed concept to improve a 15-mile stretch of Boulder Highway from Wagonwheel Drive in Henderson to Charleston Boulevard in Las Vegas includes dividing the roadway into three sections: a “through realm” flanked on each side by two “pedestrian realms.”

The “through realm” consists of two general-purpose lanes in each direction and designated mass transit lanes in the middle of the roadway. The “pedestrian realm” features wider sidewalks and more lighting for pedestrians, separated bicycle lanes, and the option for either linear parks or frontage roads for slower-moving traffic looking to access businesses and neighborhoods located off the roadway. Project partners also hope the redesign helps spur redevelopment.

To learn more about the final concept and timeline for the project, join project experts at upcoming public meetings, in person or online:

Wednesday, Sept. 25: 4-6 p.m. at the Bonneville Transit Center, 101 E.
