This technology is the first of its kind in Nevada, and the buses are the first hydrogen fuel cell electric buses to operate in the state.<\/p>\n<p>A press conference was held to showcase the new technology at UNLV Black Fire Innovation, where key federal and local officials celebrated the occasion. UNLV President\u2026 welcomed U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), U.S. Representative Susie Lee (NV-03), Nevada Senate President Pro Tempore Pat Spearman, RTC Chair and Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones, and RTC CEO MJ Maynard.<\/p>\n<p>The buses were funded with a $3.8-million Low or No Emission Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant also provides funding to train staff to maintain and operate the new technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely grateful to our federal delegation for securing funding for these two hydrogen fuel cell electric buses,\u201d said Maynard. \u201cWe have long committed to investment in innovative transit technology to reduce our emissions footprint here in Southern Nevada. This technology, which is new to Southern Nevada, helps address our sustainability goal, including moving toward a zero-emissions fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen fuel cell technology has several advantages over other power sources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s renewable and readily available.<\/strong> Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s clean<\/strong> and supports zero-carbon energy strategies with no adverse environmental impact, almost zero emissions, and reduces carbon footprints. Hydrogen fuel cells do not release greenhouse gases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s more powerful<\/strong> and energy efficient than fossil fuels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s quiet and smooth.<\/strong> Hydrogen fuel cell buses operate with little to no noise and accelerate smoothly, enhancing the customer experience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It charges quickly<\/strong>. Hydrogen fuel cells can be recharged in under fifteen minutes as compared to standard electric vehicles, which may take<\/li>\n<li><strong>It has longer usage times<\/strong>.
