Let’s have a heart-to-heart. February is American Heart Month to raise awareness about heart health and encourage all of us to take steps to reduce risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease.
Heart health is something we should all take into consideration. According to the American Heart Association, someone dies of heart disease every 38 seconds. Each February the American Heart Association reminds us to make lifestyle changes to improve our heart health.
Here are a few tips to help you do your part and take care of your heart.
1. Exercise regularly. Activities like walking, running, cycling, and swimming are great for heart health. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week. Don’t worry if you can’t quite reach 150 minutes per week just yet. A 5 minute walk or a 30 minute bike ride will do. If you haven’t tried one, take RTC Bike Share out for a ride. Beginners can get an extra little boost with the e-bikes, available 24/7, 365 days a year in downtown Las Vegas!
2. Eat heart-friendly foods. This may be the easiest change to make to improve your heart health. Start by adding more fish, oats, nuts, and berries to your meals. Fish such as salmon, tuna and trout are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and help to keep your blood flowing, lower blood pressure and triglyceride levels, which lowers your risk of heart disease.
3. Learn to manage stress. According to the American Heart Association, managing stress is good for your health and well-being. Take some “me time,” exercise regularly, get a good night’s sleep, meditate, and maintain social connections with friends and family can help relieve stress, better your quality of life, and improve your heart health.
