Earlier this year, students from K.O. Knudson Middle School presented at the RTC’s Bus Shelter and Bench Advisory Committee a new alternative solution to steel bus benches. To help solve heat safety concerns that affect riders during the hot Vegas summer months, these young engineers suggested the use of sunflower stalks to create a lightweight concrete mixture.
They were able to put their project in motion last week. A short ride on the Deuce took them to Gilcrease Orchard, where they spent the morning harvesting sunflower stalks to start construction on a prototype.
